, colorado. i'm jim lehrer of the "pbs news hour" i welcome you to the first of the presidential debates between president barack obama and former massachusetts governor mitt romney the republican nominee. this debate and the next three, two presidential, one vice presidential are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six roughly 15 minute segments, then open discussion for the remainder of each segment. thousands of people offered discussion suggestions. i made the final selections. for the record they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments as i announced in advance will be three on the economy and one each on health care, the role of government and governing. with an emphasis throughout on differences, specifics and choices. both candidates will also have two minute closing statements. the audience here in the hall has promised to remain slinlt. no cheers, applause, boos, hisss among other noisy distracting thing

correspondent jim avila now telling us the latest. jim? >> reporter: diane, american tonight grounded half its fleet of 757s, its domestic long-range workhorse, taken out of service for a second round of faa monitored fixes to prevent passenger seats from becoming dislodged in the air. at one point, one of them even turned over backwards into the row behind it. the airline's engineering team has decided the locking mechanism that secures the seat to the floor must be enhanced. it's another setback for american, which suffered record delays in september, for what it blamed on labor troubles, claiming its pilots intentionally caused delays twice as often as its competitors, something the pilots' union has denied. the seat trouble has racheted things up to now a safety issue. the seats on three flights came unhinged. just yesterday, american said it finished its inspections but now is ordering mechanics to fix the seats again, wherever the 48 planes involved land next, anywhere in the country. a move that will cause cancellations and more delays through saturday for american. diane? >> all right,

but nevertheless. with more on that tonight in the "ridiculist." 8 joining us from the campaign trail, jim acosta with the romney campaign and jessica yellin is in madison, wisconsin with the obama campaign. are the obama campaign at least off the record admitting it was not a good night for the president, putting it mildly. we've heard a lot of spin. do they believe that spin? >> they will say on the record it was not a good night for the president, yes. they say they will adjust going forward. here's one way they will adjust, i think. you know, the president's biggest asset they believe is his likability, and they want to protect that at all costs but one of the ways they have to do that, it seems they thought was to preserve it by keeping him from going on the attack. that meant he didn't defend his policies enough and that meant that he didn't challenge mitt romney enough. and it came across badly last night. so the challenge for the president is what al gore faced in 2000, where one time he held it back too much, he overcorrected in the second debate and came across as too aggressive, missed
